Cook Islands sign historic agreement to safeguard marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction

Rarotonga, Cook Islands, 29 September 2023 - The Cook Islands has reaffirmed its commitment to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity by signing the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ).

The Agreement was signed by Prime Minister the Honourable Mark Brown in the margins of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on Friday, 22 September, in New York City.
