French Navy Frigate PRAIRIAL Visits Rarotonga

Friday, 28 February 2025 – French Armed Forces Navy frigate PRAIRIAL arrived in Avatiu, Rarotonga, on Thursday, 27 February 2025, and will remain in harbour for the weekend.

The PRAIRIAL, a Floréal-class frigate based in Papeete, Tahiti, arrived as part of its operational deployment across the Pacific region. This visit underscores the shared commitment of the Cook Islands and France to promoting maritime security, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development in the Pacific.

Over the last 15 months, the Cook Islands has welcomed visits from two other French Navy vessels, ARAGO and Teriieroo a Teriierooiterai. These engagements have included interactions with the Cook Islands Police Service, enhancing mutual understanding of maritime patrol operations and strengthening regional security efforts.

The arrival of the PRAIRIAL coincides with the scheduled maintenance of our Guardian-class patrol boat, Tekukupa II, which is currently undergoing its 30-month maintenance in Cairns, Australia. The presence of the PRAIRIAL during this period highlights the strength of Pacific solidarity, as well as how we work together to maintain security and collaboration across our shared ocean.

PRAIRIAL and her crew are offering the opportunity to tour the vessel tomorrow from 9 am to 5 pm.
