Rarotonga, Cook Islands, 25 March 2026 – The Cook Islands formally welcomed the Ambassadors of the Kingdom of Spain and the Kingdom of Belgium at a Presentation of Credentials Ceremony held today, Wednesday 25 March 2026
The King’s Representative, Sir Tom Marsters received the Letters of Credence from His Excellency Mr Luis Alfonso Sánchez-Vellisco Sánchez, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain, and His Excellency Mr Karl Stouthuysen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium.
The Presentation of Credentials is a formal diplomatic ceremony through which newly appointed Heads of Mission are officially recognised and accredited to the Cook Islands, marking the commencement of their duties.
During their visit, both Ambassadors will undertake courtesy calls with the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, as well as senior government officials and civil society representatives. These engagements provide an opportunity to reaffirm partnerships and discuss areas of mutual interest and future cooperation.
The Cook Islands maintains longstanding relations with both Spain and Belgium, with engagement largely facilitated through regional and multilateral frameworks, including cooperation with the European Union. These partnerships have supported development initiatives in areas such as infrastructure, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Ms Mackenzi Wichman, welcomed the successful ceremony, noting:
