Rarotonga, Cook Islands, 2 February 2026 - The Cook Islands recently attended the 11th EU-Pacific Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) Trade Committee Meeting, held from 29-30 January 2026 at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji.
The Cook Islands delegation was led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration (MFAI), with Mr Jim Armistead, Director of the International & Trade Affairs Division, Ms Antonina Browne, Chargé d'Affaires of the Cook Islands High Commission to Fiji and Ms Teremoana Fukofuka, Foreign Service Officer, attending as observers.
The Cook Islands was invited to observe the meeting to gain a clearer understanding of the iEPA and the role and functions of its Trade Committee. The iEPA is a regional trade agreement between Pacific states and the European Union, intended to support participating Pacific countries in improving market access and integration into global trade.
On the margins of the meeting, the Cook Islands also held a bilateral discussion with the European Union to exchange views on opportunities for strengthened cooperation and trade relations under the iEPA. The Cook Islands’ engagement follows earlier participation in negotiations toward a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
“The Cook Islands is appreciative of the invitation to attend the Trade Committee meeting in an observer capacity,” said Mr Armistead. “This has provided a valuable opportunity to better understand the operation of the iEPA and to learn from the experiences of participating parties. Our attendance is focused on information-gathering and relationship-building. The Cook Islands remains committed to taking a considered and consultative approach as we continue discussions on regional trade and economic cooperation.”
The Cook Islands will continue to engage with relevant partners and stakeholders as part of its ongoing assessment of regional trade and economic cooperation initiatives.
