The Cook Islands and the People's Republic of Bangladesh formalized diplomatic relations via an Exchange of Note Verbales via respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
The most recent bilateral discussion between the two governments were held between the MFAI’s Director for Treaties, Multilateral and Oceans Division, Ms Sandrina Thondoo and Special Envoy to Minister for Shipping, H.E. Moin Ahmed within the margins of the International Maritime Organisation Marine Environment Protection Committee 81st session in London, United Kingdom last month. “This engagement allowed an opportunity to share experiences and positions on a rather difficult negotiation on decarbonisation of the shipping industry and confirm the establishment of formal diplomatic relations, paving a way pathway for further cooperation bilaterally and in the multilateral space,” said Director Thondoo.
Bangladesh, situated in South Asia, brings with it a rich cultural heritage and a rapidly growing economy, offering opportunities for collaboration in various fields, including trade, investment, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
"We welcome the establishment of diplomatic relations with Bangladesh, we share a deep appreciation for cultural diversity, environmental conservation, and sustainable development. These common values serve as a solid foundation upon which to build a robust partnership grounded in mutual respect and cooperation,” said MFAI Secretary, Tepaeru Herrmann.
MFAI officials will continue to work with Bangladesh officials towards future bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the month and years ahead with Bangladesh becoming the Cook Islands 65th diplomatic partner.
