Cook Islands Advances Strong SIDS Voice at Asia-Pacific Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 UN Water Conference

The Cook Islands took an active role in the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, contributing Pacific perspectives on water security, climate resilience and sustainable development from a Small Island Developing States (SIDS) perspective.

Representing the Cook Islands, MFAI Director of Treaties, Multilateral and Oceans, Ms Sandrina Thondoo, chaired Interactive Dialogue F on “Investments for Water”. The discussion focused on improving access to financing, strengthening institutional capacity, supporting technology transfer and building long-term partnerships to help countries develop resilient water systems.

Throughout the meeting, the Cook Islands highlighted the importance of water security for island communities, particularly as climate change continues to place increasing pressure on water resources across the Pacific. Discussions reinforced the need for practical support, stronger regional cooperation and community-led approaches to help countries achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.

Drawing from national experience, the Cook Islands shared lessons from the Te Mato Vai project, including the importance of investing in long-term water infrastructure and ensuring international commitments translate into tangible support for vulnerable communities.

As discussions continue towards the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, the Cook Islands remains committed to ensuring the priorities and realities of small island states are reflected in global water discussions and future action.
