The Ministry manages diplomatic protocol for the Government of the Cook Islands. We support the accreditation and work of foreign missions and international organisations accredited to the Cook Islands and coordinate official visits and ceremonial events. Our work is guided by the Diplomatic Privileges and Immunities Act 1968 and the Consular Privileges and Immunities Act 1971.
What we do
- Accreditation: manage the accreditation of resident and non-resident Heads of Mission, including arrangements for the presentation of credentials.
- Official visits: plan and coordinate incoming and outgoing official visits by Heads of State and Government, Ministers and senior officials, working with relevant agencies.
- Privileges and immunities: administer diplomatic and consular privileges and immunities under Cook Islands law.
- Diplomatic and consular corps: serve as the Government’s main point of contact for the diplomatic and consular corps and maintain the official Diplomatic and Consular List.
- Honorary consuls: manage the appointment and support of honorary consuls representing the Cook Islands abroad, and of foreign honorary consuls in the Cook Islands.
- State and ceremonial occasions: advise on protocol for national events, official functions and ceremonies.
